What is Trans Joy Camp?

Hosted at a rustic retreat center near Kansas City, Trans Joy Camp is a 4-day camping retreat for transgender and gender non-conforming folks of all ages*. Trans Joy Camp blends the features of a traditional summer camp with those of a DIY collaborative festival.

Trans Joy Camp is a community space that is created and operated by the campers themselves. Camp registration is pay-what-you-can and includes classes on topics such as art, nature, and wellness; daily meals and assemblies, and relaxation in a welcoming natural space that includes a lake for swimming and over160 acres of forest trails.

*minors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Stories from the Campfire

  • "Seeing and hearing the joy from fellow campers... as they met new people, forged new bonds, laughed, and cried throughout the weekend. Lots of love and healing!

    -Cam F. (he/him/his)

  • "I really enjoyed the sound exploration [class], I thought it was really important to have a space where we would explore our voices in a nonjudgmental space when a lot of dysphoria stems from voices."

    -Ken M. (they/them/theirs)

  • "Laying in the field on a blanket with the friends I made, looking at the stars, sharing desires and boundaries, and talking about our queer experience."
